The African Union (AU) members states are urged to unite in fighting the spread of fall armyworm which continue to devastate farmlands across the continent.

Experts say the pest which is new in most parts of Africa is denting efforts to achieve food security in the continent.

The fall armyworm is one of the pests that have confounded conventional methods of tackling the menace.

Cereal farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa are experiencing heavy losses due to the devastation by the invasive pest that has caused huge losses to staple cereals, especially maize and sorghum, affecting food security and trade.

Dr. Yanira Ntupanyama the Chief Director for Agriculture Irrigation and Water Development in Malawi is calling on African states to put in place measures to address the pest.

She says learning from best practices from countries that have dealt with the pest like Brazil and Nigeria could be a step in the right direction.

Yanira says already there are chemical, mechanical and biological methods that are being used in Brazil which she notes if well tested could assist Africa to deal with the fall armyworm menace.

The fall armyworm is destructive and mainly attacks cereals which are also the main staples in most of Sub-Saharan Africa.
