The government through the ministry of Agriculture has received the prestigious Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) President farming award.

According to the Chief Administrative Secretary(CAS) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Irrigation Dr. Andrew Tiumur hails the technical assistance which Kenya has enjoyed from the Japan since her independence in 1963.

The CAS was speaking at the Ministry’s headquarters in Kilimo House when he received the prestigious JICA President Award on behalf of the Ministry’s

Japan-funded Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment & Promotion Project for Local and Up-scaling (SHEP-UP) Project.Tiumur says said through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan has championed many projects in the country with tangible impact in the areas of Agriculture, Health, Environmental conservation and Research.

The annual award is presented to outstanding JICA-funded projects with tangible impact on their beneficiaries. SHEP-UP project has had notable impact in Kenya, which has led to the country being a preferred training Centre on the project operations for 23 African countries.

JICA’S Chief Representative in Kenya Ms Keiko Sano while presenting the award said, “Since its inception in Kenya in 2010, the project has had positive impact transforming the lives of smallholder horticulture farmers in Kenya and increasing their profits by 80 per cent.”
